Early in December 2004, the owners, Niël
and Laurika du Bois, arrived with Brolloks, a Chev lorry from
the early 1950’s, stacked with rough building materials,
fishing nets and ropes, at Mossel Bay – to give their free
spirit free reigns and to establishing a seafood restaurant on
a beach somewhere.
After decades as journalists and in the corporate world, and after
20 years, the two accidently ran into each a year earlier, they
decided that this time they will follow their dream – come
hell or high water!
With the blessing from Above (and thanks to the unexpected support
from a municipal official or two), the first De Vette Mossel was
erected, the doors opened and …..the first guests arrived,
and arrived….and arrived…..
Thanks to the continuous support by our newly found Mossel friends,
De Vette Mossel grew and grew. For Niël and Laurika De
Vette Mossel is still like a vacation – bare feet along one of
South Africa’s most beautiful beaches, the get together with
old Mossel friends and the making of new ones – every day!
But De Vette Mossel does not only exists of Niël and Laurika – the
dozen or so chefs, cleaners and kitchen staff is a story in its
own right. Only jobless people were employed, trained and today
they form an integral part of De Vette Mossel. Without them, De
Vette Mossel is not possible – they therefore also share
in the fruits of success.
During holidays Niël and Laurika’s five children and
their friends drop in from time to time – sleeves rolled
up…..
